Love in the Bible is more than a warm feeling. It takes shape in patience, truthfulness, generosity, and attention to other people. These passages help us think about love as something we practice.
1 Corinthians 13:4–5: The shape of patient love
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
The KJV uses “charity” for love in this passage. Paul writes to a church struggling with division and competition over spiritual gifts. His description belongs to the whole community, even though these words are often read at weddings.
Notice the ordinary actions in the passage. Love waits, refuses to boast, and resists making every conversation about itself. Choose one of those actions to practice in a relationship today.
1 John 4:19: Love begins with God
We love him, because he first loved us.
John places human love within a larger story: God’s love comes first. The surrounding chapter connects knowing God with love for one another. This is a call to respond to grace, not a competition to prove that you can love perfectly.
Receiving love can be as challenging as giving it. Reflect on what it would mean to begin a difficult conversation from gratitude rather than from the need to earn approval.
Love with truth and care
Patience does not require pretending that harmful behavior is good. Read 1 Corinthians 13:6 alongside these verses: Paul links love to truth. A loving response can include an honest conversation and appropriate boundaries.
A simple reflection
Who needs my full attention today? What would kindness look like in a specific action rather than a general intention? Ask God for help with that action, and leave room to listen.
