When someone is hurting, easy explanations rarely help. Scripture gives us words for sorrow, prayer, and the hope of God’s care. These passages are offered for devotional comfort.
Psalm 147:3: Care for the brokenhearted
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
Psalm 147 praises God’s care for both the gathered community and individual wounds. Its language lets us bring emotional hurt into prayer. You do not need to minimize the pain for it to belong in the conversation.
Psalm 34:18: Nearness in sorrow
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
The surrounding psalm acknowledges affliction. God’s nearness is not described as a reward for appearing strong. The brokenhearted are explicitly named as people to whom God draws near.
Praying without promising an outcome
You can pray for healing while admitting that you do not know how events will unfold. These verses should not be used to blame someone for continued illness or to replace appropriate professional care.
A prayer might be: God, meet us in this uncertainty. Sustain the person who is hurting, and guide those caring for them. Help us offer patient, practical love. Amen.
