Bible Verses for Grief and Loss
Read gentle Bible passages for grief, with space for lament, remembrance, and reflection on God’s nearness to the brokenhearted.

Grief does not follow a tidy timetable. A passage of Scripture can accompany sorrow without explaining it away. Read only as much as is helpful, and leave room for silence.
Psalm 34:18: Near to the brokenhearted
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
This verse names a wounded heart directly. The surrounding psalm acknowledges affliction, allowing us to hear its promise of nearness without pretending loss is small.
Matthew 5:4: A blessing for those who mourn
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
The Beatitudes describe people Jesus calls blessed, including those who mourn. The verse does not rush them past sorrow or require them to hide it.
A thoughtful way to use these verses
If you are supporting someone, ask whether they would welcome a verse before sharing one. Listening, remembering a name, or helping with an ordinary task can be an expression of care. For further reflection, read verses about healing and comfort.
