Mercy for a New Morning

A new day can arrive while yesterday’s questions remain unanswered. The Bible’s language of new mercy does not ask us to hide those questions.

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Reflect
These words belong to a lament. Their hope gains depth from the sorrow around them. God’s faithfulness is remembered by a speaker who has not escaped suffering.
Perhaps you are beginning today with energy. Perhaps you are beginning with weariness. Neither state makes you more deserving of compassion. The passage invites remembrance of God’s mercy as a starting point.
Look for one small way to receive care and one small way to extend it. Gratitude can be specific: a person who listened, a place to rest, or the chance to begin a necessary conversation again.
Pray
Faithful God, help me receive this day as it is. Make me attentive to your compassion and generous with the care I have been given. Amen.
