You do not have to become calm before you pray. Prayer can begin with the thoughts you have, including the ones that feel unfinished or difficult to explain. The following prayer is original devotional writing, not a Bible quotation.

A passage to begin with

Philippians 4:6–7KJV

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Paul invites specific requests and thanksgiving. He does not say that a perfectly worded prayer is required. Read the surrounding chapter if you have time, and notice the emphasis on a life shared in faith.

A prayer for an anxious moment

God, I come to you with a busy mind and a heart that feels unsettled. You know what I am carrying, including the things I cannot explain well.

Help me name my concerns honestly. Keep me from measuring my faith by how calm I feel. Remind me that I can turn toward you in the middle of uncertainty.

Give me wisdom for what needs attention today. Help me recognize what I can do, what I need to wait for, and where I can receive support from others.

Thank you for the care I have already received. Make me attentive to the small gifts I might otherwise miss. Be near to me as I take the next step. Amen.

Make these words your own

Replace “what I am carrying” with the particular concern on your heart. Pause after a sentence if you need to. A short prayer repeated thoughtfully can be more useful than rushing through a long one.

After the prayer

Consider one practical next step, such as asking someone you trust for company or addressing one manageable task. Prayer can accompany support and appropriate care; it does not need to stand alone.
